Started on Monday at the International Conference Center in Lomé, Togo, the 72nd session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa ended this Friday August 26, 2022.
For five days, health ministers from 47 countries, officials, representatives of African organizations, senior WHO officials, and development partners deliberated on several issues, with the aim of redefining a new health policy for the continent impacted by multiple crises.
At the end of the session, several decisions habe been taken, such as the launch of a campaign against sickle cell disease and the adoption of new strategies to fight against chronic diseases and to transform the African health system following of Covid-19.
At the same time, discussions made it possible to address issues relating to health financing in Africa, the trafficking of fake and substandard drugs, or the persistence of diseases such as tuberculosis.
“We remain fully committed to working with each and every one of our Member States to achieve our health goals, which I firmly believe are within our reach, despite the challenges.”, said Regional Director Matshidiso Moeti, during the opening ceremony.
The official, originally from Botswana, will also see her country host the next session, announced from August 28 to September 1, 2023.
