On Monday, October 9th, Togo and the European Union held their second session of political dialogue in Lomé, within the framework of the new agreement between the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries and those in Europe.
The proceedings, co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey, and the EU Ambassador, Joaquin Tasso Villalonga, brought together several members of the Togolese government.
On the agenda were about ten important issues related to the regional situation, Togo’s efforts for peace, counter-terrorism cooperation, the Emergency Program for the Savanes Region (PURS) and its challenges, preparations for upcoming electoral events, as well as matters concerning governance and human rights.
“Addressing political crises in the countries of the sub-region, both parties reiterated their support for ECOWAS’ peace efforts and the need for a swift return to constitutional order and civilian rule. The European side praised Togo’s efforts in promoting peace and security in the West African sub-region through peaceful conflict resolution means such as good offices and mediation,” read a joint statement published by both parties.
“This dialogue aims to exchange information, promote mutual understanding, and facilitate the definition of common priorities and principles,” emphasized the European representative.
According to the Togolese FM, “the relevance of these topics is unquestionable. We are completely open to discussing these issues within the framework of this dialogue.”
