The United States of America has “strongly” condemned the deadly terrorist attack that claimed the life of eight Togolese soldiers in the north of the country on the night of May 10-11, 2022.
“The United States Embassy in Togo is deeply saddened by the sneak attack on the Kpinkankandi outpost in the Savanes region on the night of May 10-11, 2022. It strongly condemns this attack and presents its most sincere condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, to the Togolese people and to the Togolese Armed Forces,” said a statement from the embassy on Friday.
“The despicable and cruel nature of the attack is proof that violent extremism has no justification and must be fought by all legal means available to states,” the statement added.
According to the Embassy, the attack came at a time coinciding with a visit by Ambassador Elizabeth Fitzsimmons to the same region to meet with various social and administrative actors to discuss contributions to social cohesion in the Savannahs.
The United States pledges to continue to stand with Togo in its efforts to prevent and counter violent extremism, through the Interministerial Committee for the Prevention and Countering of Violent Extremism (CIPLEV) and initiatives centered on the populations of the differences American development agencies.
