The measure will be effective from Thursday, November 25, 2021.
According to the government, more than a million people, or 25% of the Togolese target population, have already registered on the digital platform for the enrollment and monitoring of vaccinated people, set up from the start of the vaccination campaign. by Togo.
This platform, entirely developed in Togo, allows the issuance of a digital COVID-19 vaccination certificate with QR code, to people who have received the minimum number of doses required.
“Thanks to this digital device, the Togolese state was able to establish reciprocity with the European system of digital COVID-19 vaccination certificates in record time,” the statement noted.
European Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders welcomed the growing number of countries joining the EU effort and stressed that 51 countries and territories on five continents are now connected to the COVID digital certificate system of the EU.
“I am also delighted that we have the first country in Southeast Asia (Singapore) and the first country in sub-Saharan Africa (Togo) that will be interconnected to the COVID digital certificate. As the holiday season approaches, I would like to reaffirm to travelers the confidence to travel inside and outside the EU, ”he continued.
Ambassador of the European Union in Togo, Joaquín Tasso Vilallonga for his part congratulated the Togolese government for its “proactivity in order to obtain the equivalence of the digital vaccination certificate with that of the European Union”.
“This is good news for all Togolese and Togolese, especially those in the diaspora and European businessmen making regular trips to Togo,” he added.
Togo therefore becomes the first country in sub-Saharan Africa whose digital COVID-19 vaccination certificate is recognized in the 27 countries of the European Union.
