Togo has been holding consultations between all the parties involved in the conflict in Darfur since Sunday July 23, 2023 in the Capital Lomé. This comes after many countries and organisations try their chances to restore peace in Sudan.
According to the Togolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof Robert Dussey, the Lomé meeting, which gathers politicians, political activists, academics and civil society, will provide the leaders of Darfur with an open framework for discussion likely to mitigate the effects of the war and preserve the unity of society.
The Togolese authorities say they are convinced that pacification in Darfur could pave the way for a negotiated solution in Sudan.
“Togo is geographically very distant from this conflict, but its past experiences in mediation give it some weight to try something to end the war in Sudan”, says the Togolese head of diplomacy.
Nevertheless, the Western African nation indicates that the Lomé meeting does not call into question the peace talks currently being conducted by Saudi Arabia, the United States and the United Nations.
For 4 months, Sudan has been in the throes of a war between the paramilitaries (FSR) of General Mohammad Hamdane Dagalo and the regular army (SAF) of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane. The fighting has already claimed more than 3,000 lives.
